The Board of Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (KPHL) recently toured the Cancer Service Unit at ANGAU Memorial Hospital, where the company has invested over K20 million to improve cancer treatment services.
Between 2020 and 2025, after a tripartite agreement with the Morobe PHA and ANGAU, KPHL supported the re-establishment of the radiotherapy and brachytherapy units at the hospital. Funding support enabled engagement of a resident oncologist, training of radiotherapists and procurement of equipment including the Cobalt‑60 radioactive source that enabled the resumption of radiotherapy treatment in Papua New Guinea.
Kumul Petroleum Chairman, Mr. Gerea Aopi, said the visit provided the Board with an opportunity to see first hand the facilities that have been equipped through the company’s support.
“Today’s visit allowed us to understand the work being carried out here, and the difference that improved medical equipment can make for patients,” Mr. Aopi said.
He noted that cancer remains a major health challenge in Papua New Guinea and highlighted the value of supporting activities that directly affect communities.
“So many families across the country are impacted by cancer. Supporting initiatives that help improve access to diagnosis and treatment reflects our broader developmental role as a national company,” he said.
Mr. Aopi added that the Board appreciated the time spent with the clinical team and the insights shared during the visit.
The visit was facilitated by ANGAU Memorial Hospital CEO, Dr. Kipas Binga, and staff from the Cancer Service Unit.
The Board’s visit coincided with the company’s annual charity golf event, which was held in Lae on Friday 6 Mrach. The tournament is staged each year to raise funds for the purchase of essential medication for patients receiving chemotherapy treatment at the ANGAU Cancer Service Unit.
