Kumul Petroleum Holdings announces new intakes at the Kumul Petroleum Academy
Papua New Guinea’s National Oil and Gas Company (NOC) Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (KPHL) today announced 40 new intakes for the Kumul Petroleum Academy (KPA), which builds PNG resources capacity.
The 2019 KPA competency-based (Job-Ready) Technician Development Scholarship program began classes this week with 40 young trainees selected from around the country.
The 12-month training program is sponsored jointly by ExxonMobil PNG and Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited.
KPA, a non-profit industrial training facility located just outside Port Moresby advertised for intakes last September.
Over 2000 applications were received from around the country and after a stringent screening process 40 have been selected.
The current trainees comprising 15 females and 25 males will go through an intensive competency-based training program (Level 3 – Oil & Gas Maintenance Technician) in the fields of Mechanical Maintenance, Operation/Production Maintenance and Electrical Maintenance in Oil & Gas.
KPHL and ExxonMobil PNG embarked on the competency-based (Job-Ready) Technician Development program in 2016, sponsoring the first batch of 32 young Papua New Guineans.
The Chief Operating Officer of the Academy, Mr Luke Liria said the Academy and its sponsors are proud to have witnessed a very high success rate on job placements of the trainees with reputable oil and gas companies in country, and outstanding performance records so far after completion of the inaugural training program in 2016.
“This year’s selection has followed through a very stringent process ensuring equal and fair representation across the 22 provinces plus other vital selection criteria. The top 100 candidates were identified across the nation and best 40 selected based on merit.
“There has been an increase in the sponsorship from KPA’s first batch compared to the second batch of trainees this year. This basically proves to KPA the output of quality in the trainee technicians in the first year of the program.
“This training program would not be possible without the invaluable support from both sponsors EMPNG and KPHL. EMPNG has greatly supported this program by investing and providing the opportunity to 29 more young Papua New Guineans with Gr.12 and TVET backgrounds to enter the oil and gas industry. KPHL again has committed for another 11 trainees this year.”
Managing Director of KPHL and Director of KPA, Mr Wapu Sonk said; “The 100 percent job placement rate for the 2016 graduates demonstrates not only KPA’s yield towards its commitment in building skilled national workforce and sustaining capacity within petroleum and process-oriented industries in PNG, but also positively contributes towards achieving our partner, ExxonMobil’s top priority which is building operational and intellectual capacity in PNG.”
“The outstanding outcome of the program also contributes to KPHL’s goal of becoming a National Oil and gas Company and its aim to develop and have a highly skilled and competent PNG workforce. “
“This program will also benefit our partnerships with ExxonMobil, Oil Search and TOTAL, where we will be able to provide a long term, in-country solution to the competence and skills development that will be aligned to recognized international standards and will provide a platform for long term development and sustainability.”
“Our long term goal is to grow a highly-skilled workforce in the resources sector in PNG. That fits into KPHL’s vision is to create opportunities for Papua New Guineans and this joint effort to develop our capacity, is a fulfilment of that vision.”

Background
KPA was formerly known as South Pacific Employment Institute (SPEI) and was founded in 2014 as one of current Government’s PPP initiative in the TVET industry. KPA is currently in partnership with KPHL and Site Group International (SGI). SGI is a known industrial training facilitator with wealth of international experience serving major clients in the oil, gas, energy and mining and its capability workforce development.
