Nerau and Karyuliarto Sworn-In as members of the Kumul Petroleum Board of Directors

Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (Kumul Petroleum), Papua New Guinea’s national oil and gas company (NOC), officially announces today that Mr. Paul Emmanuel Nerau, and Mr. Hari Karyuliarto have been appointed as Directors of the Board of Kumul Petroleum. The appointments were made on 12 July, 2021, with these two new Directors being formally sworn-in to serve as members of the Kumul Petroleum Board of Directors, led by Chairman Dr Benedict Yaru, on Friday 30 July, 2021.

Dr. Yaru said that the appointments were made after a rigorous process, in accordance with the Kumul Petroleum Holdings Authorisation Act 2015, which culminated in the formal appointments by the Trustee.

“As Chairman of the Board of Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (Kumul Petroleum), I wish to convey the sincere gratitude of the Board, to the Kumul Petroleum Trustee and Prime Minister, Hon. James Marape MP, for the timely appointments of Mr. Paul Emmanuel Nerau, and Mr. Hari Karyuliarto. Their appointments come at a critical time when the National Government, and Kumul Petroleum prepare for the advent of major Projects including the Papua LNG, P’nyang, and the offshore PASCA A. The Board welcomes these appointments at this critical juncture in Kumul Petroleum’s history.

“On behalf of the Board, I take this opportunity to formally congratulate Mr. Paul Nerau, and Mr. Hari Karyuliarto, on their respective appointments to the Board. We are confident that each of you bring exceptional value to the Board, and the business of Kumul Petroleum, with your calibre, individual achievements, experiences and expertise”. 

The Directors, Mr. Nerau, and Mr. Karyuliarto were Sworn-In by Senior Provincial Magistrate (NCD), His Worship, Mr. Billy Pidu at a small ceremony at the Hilton Hotel in Port Moresby.

Kumul Petroleum Managing Director Wapu Sonk said following the ceremony: “On behalf of the Management, and Staff of Kumul Petroleum, I congratulate Mr. Nerau, and Mr. Karyuliarto, on their respective appointments to the Board of Kumul Petroleum. Congratulations”.

“As Chairman Yaru has said, the appointments of Director Nerau and Director Karyuliarto come at a crucial time when the National Government, and Kumul Petroleum are negotiating, or entering into formal negotiations for large projects including the Papua LNG, P’nyang, and the offshore PASCA A, amongst other critical matters such as reforms in the legislative, and policy space”.

“The Board has been, and continues to be very supportive, and remains pivotal to the success of Kumul Petroleum’s participation in these major economic projects as the State’s nominee”.

Brief Profile of Mr Paul Emmanuel Nerau

Mr. Paul Emmanuel Nerau, from Bakaukaku in Buin District of South Bougainville has over 40 years of extensive experience working in the petroleum sector, the mining sector, manufacturing industry and commercial business since the 1970’s.   

Mr. Nerau is not new to the boardroom, having also a lengthy history of serving as a board member in various director roles; with his most recent leadership role as Chairman of Kumul Consolidated Holdings Limited (KCHL) where Mr. Nerau served from 2014 to 2018.

Brief Profile of Mr Hari Karyuliarto

Mr. Hari Karyuliarto hails from Yogyakarta, Indonesia and has a Bachelor of Law Degree from Diponegoro University, Indonesia; and later obtained a Master’s Degree in management from the Gajah Mada University of Indonesia.

With over 23 years of extensive experience with LNG business in his past career, including on C-Level roles, on commercial, sales, LNG marketing, transportation, project management i.e. liquefaction project, LNG terminal (FSRU), LNG terminal conversion, and gas pipe line; Mr. Karyuliarto is well placed to provide advice at the board level, on various areas of the oil and gas industry but more importantly he brings many years of National Oil Company experience from Pertamina, Indonesia.
