‘Empowering a nation’ is the corporate social responsibility vision for Kumul Petroleum Holdings Limited (Kumul Petroleum), with a focus to empower Papua New Guineans now and into the future.

This is in line with the company’s core values, which is to maximise wealth and opportunities for Papua New Guinea now, and into the future. Never has it been more so apparent than when the organisation presented to Ivingoi Health Centre much needed medical equipment that will support the newly built maternity ward, because children are our country’s most valuable resource for now and into the future.

According to Mr Paul Hofa, Manager of Ivingoi Health Centre the facility annually treats approximately 75, 000 people and recently added to the health centre a maternity ward which was completed in 2020. Since then, the maternity ward has seen in the year 2020 -2021, 198 births and only 2 neonatal deaths; and has been operating with limited medical equipment while working to ensure healthy and safe deliveries.

“This donation means a lot to us as it is the first of its kind from a big organisation like Kumul Petroleum, we had the building and with no special equipment such as the Hi Vac Suction Pump and a manually operated Vacuum Extractor; and mothers would really struggle with the birthing process”.

“Thank you Kumul Petroleum, now that we have the medical equipment we need, this will encourage more expectant mothers to come to deliver their babies safely at the facility; and likewise help staff in their performance”.

The donated equipment comprises of ten (10) IV Drip Stand Standard; two (2) Wheel Chair; two (2) cot including two (2) trays underneath; one (1) Hb 201 plus Analyser; a complete set Liberty Nebulizer Pump; a Hi Vac Suction Pump and a manually operated Vacuum Extractor.

It is hoped that with the new medical equipment presented by Kumul Petroleum, the lives of women and children in the district and surrounding areas will be greatly impacted for the better, with healthy and happy mothers and babies, there will be a healthy and happy family and community.

In a statement Kumul Petroleum said: Kumul Petroleum continues to keep its commitment to support the government deliver life-saving medical equipment to hospitals and health centres in Papua New Guinea as part of its core value to embrace health and well-being for Papua New Guineans, with a particular focus to specialist healthcare.

Though the equipment presented today is one that you would find in any clinic or hospital, Kumul Petroleum considers maternity healthcare a specialist area that requires much needed attention given that our country has one of the highest maternal and newborn mortality rates for the Western Pacific Region. *The statistics show that for every 1000 births in PNG, nine mothers and 24 babies die, making this an emergency that cannot be ignored. Not in the least by Kumul Petroleum whose vision and mission is to maximise wealth and opportunities for Papua New Guineans of all ages, for now and into the future.

The donation is made under Kumul Petroleum’s social inclusion programme which  today, committed over K29, 500.00 (K29,558.16 plus freight) to support the purchase and delivery of the much needed medical equipment that will serve the district of Okapa and surrounding areas.
